The noise experts at Wave Engineering are excited to show off the latest tool in our acoustic measurement toolbox. Wave Engineering has invested in a state-of-the-art Brüel & Kjær acoustic camera. The camera allows us to actually see sound radiation and leaks. Originally designed for aerospace and automotive noise applications, Wave Engineering looks forward to using it for industrial, environmental, manufacturing, architectural, and other innovative noise applications.

The acoustic camera uses 30 microphones and sophisticated signal processing and software to identify the loudest source of noise when many sources are present. It allows Wave Engineering noise experts to pinpoint sound leaks in walls, doors, and floors and target the required noise mitigation. Our consultants use the camera to find transient and intermittent noise sources on equipment or machinery, and to identify which components of large equipment are causing excessive noise. Acoustic treatment can then be applied only where necessary.

Engineers can view video images in real time or save still or video images and data for later analysis. The camera is easily portable and can be used indoors or outdoors. The image shows how the acoustic camera was used to identify the excessive noise coming from a pipe support instead of from the piping itself. This was not easy to discern with the ear or with a conventional sound level meter. The pipe support noise was then mitigated at much less expense than treating the entire pipe would have been.
